Peri-Implantitis
Peri-Implantitis Treatment: Protecting Your Dental Implants
While dental implants cannot get cavities, they can still be affected by gum disease. Peri-implantitis is an inflammatory condition that affects the soft and hard tissues surrounding an implant.
Symptoms of Peri-Implant Disease
Much like natural teeth, implants can accumulate bacterial plaque. Look for these warning signs:
- Red or swollen gums around the implant
- Bleeding during brushing
- Deepening gum pockets
- A visible “looseness” of the implant (in advanced stages)
Prevention and Care
Peri-implantitis often starts as peri-implant mucositis—a reversible inflammation limited to the soft tissues. If caught early, we can treat the infection and save the implant. If it progresses to bone loss, specialized surgical intervention is required to decontaminate the implant surface and regenerate lost bone.
